This course introduces language in a social context by focusing on the interrelationship between language and society. It examines how language may vary according to social class, gender, identity, and ethnicity. The course analyses the relationship of language powerw, and politics and demonstrates how language has been used as a tool to dominate people. It also focuses on the powerful link between language and culture and how they inform each other. The course is interdisciplinary in nature in terms of its links with sociology, linguistics, anthropology, gender and cultural studies.
